Cast the First Stone

I think that most people believe that it is important to keep yourself accountable. A common phrase is, "keep your side of the street clean." There's a problem with that metaphor though, wind.

If your side is clean, but your neighbor's side isn't, then what happens when the wind blows?

Think about how natural it is to give advice to someone but when we're in a similar dilemma it's much more difficult to see the solution. Mirrors have been around for about 8,000 years and some people have never seen a mirror in their life. Before mirrors, we used each other. I can see the speck in your eye and you can see the speck in mine, lucky us.

Of course, sometimes we'll be wrong. A speck that I see may actually be just the opposite. What's the harm? A few wasted minutes. But the benefit, even if I'm wrong, is that the other person knows that I care. A big part of that is remembering it's not what you say, but how you say it.

If these words resonate, share them.
