What If You Didn’t?

We do things because we’ve done things. I put my left leg into my pants first, every time.

Our lives are built on a simple formula:

When X happens, we do Y about it.

That is until we decide, when X happens, we do Z instead.

Idk what things need changing in your life, but what's one thing you can do differently? Instead of doing what you always do, getting what you have always gotten, what if you didn’t?

Thoughtleaders Are Still Employees

It’s rare to see someone on TV that wants to change the status quo. Major media companies are owned by wealthy people. The host, is usually a millionaire as well. How likely is it that someone in power will actively try to reduce their power? Before we take someone at their word, we should look at standing in society.

Regrettable Habits

What’s something you do and almost always regret?

Become aware of this habit. Do your best to stop.

You may even need to get help for this. Professional help isn’t the only answer. Getting a friend or trusted acquaintance to be your Accountability Partner can be quite effective.

If you’re past the oblivious and denial stages in your regrettable habit, the next step is to do something about it. Reach out for help if you feel like you need it.

What’s Wrong With Judgment?

People say, “Don’t judge me.” I ask, why not?

“Don’t judge others unfairly,” is something I’ll argue for. Imagine living a life without judgment, you wouldn’t last long. You need to make calls from the time your eyes open in the morning to when they close at night.

Fair judgment is based on things like actions and words, where a choice can be made.

So judgment isn’t the issue, the issue is judgement when the other party has no blame in the matter. It’s why people get defensive, especially when they’re in a position of privilege. It’s not their fault, just as it isn’t a colored person’s fault for the color of their skin. Now, the actions that are taken in conjunction with that privilege, fair game. But don’t make the uncontrollable factors a point at all, you can’t win that argument.

Where Are The Solutions?

People are strange. In one breath they say they can’t complain and in the very next they complain about something.

I don’t know if complaining about something without offering a solution is healthy but it doesn’t seem like it would be. Bringing pure negativity into your life hardly ever is.

If you want to change the world, start.

Complaining Can Be Productive

Progress comes from complaints. The first person to invent something has a complaint about the current state of affairs.

A bag was probably one of the first inventions, dry out this animal hide, roll my stuff into it and all of a sudden I can carry more than a handful of things. But then someone tied that to their back, freeing their hands, changing the game.

But what if we stopped complaining and said everything is as good as we need it to be? Then this will be as good as it will ever get.

Complaining without changing something is borderline insanity. I don’t want to live in a prison of negativity built by my own thinking.

Easy Is Interesting

What’s the easiest thing you can do? How will that get you to success or happiness?

What’s the hardest thing you can do? Will that get you to success or happiness faster?

We always like doing what’s easy, because it’s easy. I hope I can do what’s hard, what’s purposeful. Short term sacrifice, long term gain. It isn’t easy saying no to instant gratification. However, by doing what’s hard, it will make your life much easier in the future.

Imagine what your life would look like if you did what you knew you should be doing.

Nonprofits Should Expire

If someone starts a homeless shelter, should there be a plan for it to be ultimately converted into something else?

When a nonprofit becomes a business all of a sudden ending the problem doesn’t seem that good for the employees of that business.

I think a better model would be something with a definitive goal. House 100 people for example. Once they do that the non profit would shut down and sure the same people could start another but we’d see the numbers.

We’d see that it took in $2,000,000 to house those 100 people. But there’s another nonprofit that housed 100 for $600,000. So, where would people want to put their money in for the next one?

Are we looking for cures or treatment plans?

Judging Consideration

Courtesy. Is someone thinking of you or not?

Too often we think about what someone does for us and not what they didn’t. If someone knows you’ve been outside in the heat all day and the first or second thing out of their mouth isn’t “Can I get you something to drink?” then you might have a problem.

Someone explained this to me much better a long time ago, but it’s worth pondering. What is someone not doing that would be nice if instead, they were doing?

Ratings Over Everything

We’re sheep. Being herded.
They control what’s on the screen, picking what will make us watch the most. Even furthering theories to entice people to act more in the future so that they can create more “news” stories.

The self-creating self-eating serpent. What a world.

Media companies have one job, to get ratings. If they lie for it, so what? If they create narratives that lead us to war, so what?

We have to at least acknowledge that some people value money over human life. What happens when they own the media?

Be A Fan

It’s easy to hate on and make fun of something.
It can be just as easy to praise and appreciate as well.

Be a fan. Wish for people to succeed and they’ll probably wish you well in return.

The world has enough haters, be a fan for a change.

Kids Can Do Almost Anything

Consistency.

If a child does two years of this or that, here and there throughout their academic life not much impact will be created. Imagine instead, that same child doing 10 years of math club. She’s going to Harvard, Yale, CalTech, pretty much guaranteed.

Focus.

You’re not a kid, but you probably know one. Just because your ship has sailed doesn’t mean you can’t be the wind in someone else’s sails.

Even if your ship has sailed, in five years you’ll be five years older. How will you grow or shrink?

Nine Cop Cars

I’ve been in the back of nine cop cars. My only criminal record consists of two DUIs. When I see police, I see my freedom at risk. My first interaction with them on the street when I was 11 or 12 and got stopped and frisked, a short, mexican boy with a backpack walking in a mostly white neighborhood. Did it matter that I lived there? No. I was a suspect, automatically.

When others see police, they may not feel the way I do and that’s probably because of their experiences with police in the past. Cops need to do better. We need to make their job easier as well. One day at a time, all we can do is try to change the laws so that people like me and victims of much worse can live a little easier.

Paying For Labels

People pay for labels. People will pay you if you have the right label attached. People will pay you if you will give them a label they want.

Either with money or attention.

Some people don’t want to be labeled, that in itself, is a label. Labels are inevitable. Embrace the inevitable.

Question Negativity

I recently read an article about a cartoon show I liked, Rick and Morty. The author broke it down simply. The show is about a grandpa abusing his family for laughs.

How is that entertaining? Why is that entertaining?

Moving forward I don’t plan on watching this show again or shows similarly making light of serious and deplorable behavior.

Maybe it is just a show, but I can’t come up with a better answer than that.

Overnight Success Exists

It happens that very first day you decide to take action. You do something that moves you closer to success and the next day you keep it up. Success is all about defining a goal and achieving it. If your daily activities get you closer to overall success then you’ve had a successful day.

Your Better Half

A relationship should be peace not chaos.

Opposites attract because one person should balance out the other. It takes two people to argue or fight. If one person doesn’t engage in it, peace will prevail. If you get two people that like arguing, chaos will ensue.

Listen to Your Emotions

I know there are people that say something like, “if you change your feelings the the world changes.” What if you can’t change your feelings?

Maybe, just maybe, that’s when we need to listen to our emotions the most.

Recently a family member was getting on my nerves.  I tried to change my thoughts, I meditated, journaled, claimed to accept it, I even prayed. You name it, I tried. I even asked the person doing what annoyed me to stop. They didn’t.

Emotions can be a great tool to determine your next action. Instead of disregarding them, maybe it’s sometimes best to use those emotions as a call to action.

My solution was to get out of the situation. Physically. As soon as the flight was booked, I felt relief. No, I’m not a perfect stoic, a part of me hopes to never be. I like having an internal gauge that helps me move through life. So far at least, it has worked out pretty well.

Unhealthy Weight Loss

People say don’t lose weight unhealthily

Like what? Exercising and eating less?

What’s a healthy way to lose weight? One burger instead of two? A 12 oz soda instead of a two liter?

How about this, if it’s working for you, you honestly feel good and can keep it up, then do it.

The worst part is when people who don’t have what you want are telling you how to get what you want. Copy the successful people, disregard the rest.

How Destructive Are You?

Scale of 1-10. 1 being 5 sets of clothes and two pairs of shoes. 10 being you’d buy a mega yacht if you had the money.

I think I’m a 2 or 3.

This year, I’ve purchased nothing new besides underwear. Shockingly, my life has been wonderful.

Amazon has not been happy with my change of habits I’m sure but I bet The Amazon would be grateful if it could show it.

Consumption means destruction. Destroy less.

The Abundance Myth

Abundance is a thing.

Maybe you never saw abundance in your life and it’s hard to imagine.

The truth is, abundance comes only to a small minority of people. Those lucky to have received it somehow and to a smaller number who have earned it.

Abundance isn’t a magical mindset, it’s a state of being. If Warren Buffet decided to think negative thoughts and how scarcity exists, his $65,000,000,000 wouldn’t vanish.

Abundance comes from actions, does mindset help? Maybe, but it can’t be the only thing.

How will you earn your abundance?

Running Red Lights

What happens when most people walk up to a red light?

They look left, look right, no cars coming, they walk.

Can a car make it across the street faster than a person? Probably.

So why do we all wait for the light to change, when we’re driving but almost never when walking?

My proposal is simple. Treat red lights as stop signs unless there’s a sign that says no turn on red (blind corners usually) or a new sign that's for this specific purpose.

If 200,000,000 cars spent even a minute less on US roads per day imagine what that would do to decrease both pollution and traffic.

The Perfect Day

Read a little. Create a little. Eat well.

Sleep a lot. Think a lot. Love a lot.

Exercise. Meditate. Laugh.

I don’t know what your list is, or even if you’ve ever made one. Making one is definitely worth the couple of minutes that it’ll take.

Is It All In Your Head?

Playing the victim feels good sometimes. Evolution has done a lot in helping us manipulate others to our benefit. Our victimhood becomes a part of our identity. Cops broke my collarbone almost ten years ago so now that affects how I see all cops.

What happens if I say, I forgive those cops and want to move on? Does a little part of me die? Yes.

The part that dies is the part that found comfort in being a victim. It’s a blanket I’d probably be best served to give up.

Who You Could Be depends on your actions more than anything, are you making excuses or solutions?

Massive Action Matters

I guess. But I like small actions too. I’d rather see some action than no action.

Nothing comes from nothing. Except for the universe maybe. But besides that, what you do will largely determine what you get.

I think we’re all different, some of us do really well changing massively and taking those actions. Others don’t. Take what works, and leave the rest.

Busy or Building?

We have a list, we do the list, a year passes and we haven’t reached our goals.

How does this happen?

We put action on a pedestal and lose track of the bigger picture.

Success usually isn’t accidental. If you plan on achieving, make sure that your actions are in line with your goals and not just what makes you feel productive today.

Acknowledge The Wins

Life is good if you stop to acknowledge it. Most people have way more good than bad in their life. But when you turn on the news show of your life, it’s easy to remember the bad and overlook the good.

A good exercise to do is think back to five times you could have made worse decisions and how terrible your life would be if that had happened. But it didn’t, so even if you’re down, you’re not out. Keep making good decisions, one after another.

Relationships

If you’re happy alone why settle for anything less than happiness? Constant fighting seems like a bad life.

I think millennials are going to marry less often but stay married for a longer time and divorce rates will drop. Is it better? I think so. I’d rather see a world full of people that stay together for love rather than obligation.

What about the lonely people? I don’t know, is it more lonely to be alone or with someone that you’ve lost connection with years ago?

Exercise and Eating Better

For yourself, for the people that care about you, and for the people you care for. Exercise and eat better.

When will you fight?

I’m not saying be perfect or that anyone is. A necessary step in reversing a problem habit is to stop doing the behavior. If you don’t exercise, going from zero to once a week is mathematically infinite times more exercise. A 500 calorie a day habit is one pound of fat per week. The body is complex and you probably won’t lose 50 lbs in a year from cutting that out but it’ll probably be at least 40.

In a years time a year will go by no matter what, so what will you do along the way? Hit the gym 50 times or zero? Eat that junk food everyday or leave it to once a week? Your life, your call.

No Binge Rule

No matter what it is. No more than one hour per day if it isn’t making money, bringing you closer to someone or teaching you something.

No matter what food, no more than 400 calories from it a day.

No matter what, no binging.

I haven’t been perfect at this but this has helped tremendously.

Media Bias

The media we consume, whether it be personal media like facebook posts or corporate media like news shows will have a bias. Even if it’s as benign as the creator wanting us to feel a certain way about them, it’s there.

When we see expensive to produce media, we have to think, “What are they trying to get out of it?” More than likely, it’s money, but it’s not a direct transaction so they need to get sponsors or push an agenda that enriches the owners. These sponsors want more viewers. Corporate media does their best to cover and create controversy so that we tune in. Especially if that controversy lines their pockets by making us purchase things or fund certain industries.

War gets people tuning in, so what do you think corporate media wants? More or less of it? What about the fact that the people that own media companies also have large stakes in weapons companies?

Maybe we shouldn’t believe every narrative, from either side. Maybe if we follow the money a much darker truth will emerge.

Playing The Victim

I read a post that said, “XYZ individuals are so undervalued.”

My knee jerk reaction was to ask, “By who?”

Making up a statement with zero supporting evidence and then including yourself as a member of that group disrespects real victims.

There are people that will be persecuted today. People that will be killed for the way they were born today. People that will be undervalued simply because they were born. Before you speak, post, publish or hit send, think of the message you’re spreading. Is it true? Is it good? Is it necessary?

Keeping It Off

If I’m telling someone you have to find out what works for you, when trying to help them better themselves they probably have to do something new.

Let’s talk about losing weight. If someone has lost weight before then losing weight isn’t the problem, keeping it off is. When it comes to keeping the weight off, they might not know what works.

So, they have to seek outside help. Maybe it’s embarrassing. But really, asking for help or seeking it is one of the most human things we can do. You have to change what you’re doing to change what you’re getting.

Equality vs. Fairness

Equal: regarding or affecting all objects in the same way.
Fair: marked by impartiality and honesty : free from self-interest, prejudice, or favoritism.

Pretty close synonyms right?

To treat people equally doesn’t mean you’re treating them fairly. You can treat people horribly and as long as you’re consistent, that’s equality.

Fairness therefore, is a better goal, especially when some laws we have and themselves unfair.

Lonely

I felt like I was going to be lonely at an event where at least a handful of people I know were going to be. What does that mean?

I felt like I’d be awkward and distant. I chose not to go. I was unsure how to feel the day of, the next day regret settled in. I don’t know why I didn’t go, it was hot, so that’s an easy excuse. It was an hour away, another convenient excuse.

I don’t think they’re good enough reasons. I told a friend that I’d be there and I wasn’t. So I lied. I owed them an apology and gave them one.

Being dependable is something I want to be. Maybe it means saying no from the beginning more often. But maybe it means I should go to that event regardless of how I currently feel.  Because nine times out of ten, I’m glad I went instead of stayed.

No Second Chances

Look to your past and see where second chances have worked out. Critique your own judgment.

Chances are that giving second chances hasn’t worked out that well. Repeating the same behavior and expecting different results is what?

Nobody Is Holding You Back

Are there arms around you? No. Is someone actively sabotaging your efforts? No. Are they talking shit? That’s different.

They’re using their words to disagree with you or to pass judgment on you. Why give them power? If you need someone else’s approval to be happy you’ve already lost. If you keep talking about a struggle that doesn’t seem to exist, you lost. Who benefits when we give power to a seemingly nonexistent problem?

Regulation Changes People

You say everyone deserves a living wage. Well, not everyone needs to live in an expensive city. Not everyone needs a car, ten pairs of shoes, a $1,000 phone or a wardrobe that looks like a department store clothing rack.

When you make other people do what you want it limits potential. The person that would have loved to work for $7 an hour can’t, the owner who could have paid $7 an hour can’t pay $15. What happens? You’re seeing what happens. Small stores close, big stores close. Businesses set up with less employees boom.

Even though I support a $15 minimum wage, I also support the right to waive that, when I was 14 making $6 an hour working for a small business (completely illegal), it shaped who I am. If regulation would have gotten in the middle of that, I definitely wouldn’t be who I am today.

Always Be Building

One good decision after another builds resiliency.

One bad decision after another will get you pretty quickly to the gutter.

Imagine if you kept doing what you knew you should be doing. That’s how you build a great life.

Becoming Who You Could Be is all about your actions, choose wisely.

Don’t Say Anything Dumb

Easier said than done. Maybe. Don’t we get to think before we speak? If we make our mind up to not say anything dumb, then we’ll do a much better job at it. I’m not saying you’ll be perfect, but better.

Before words, come thoughts. How do we stop thinking dumb things? I’ll let you know if I find out.

40 Hours of Waste

Any “work” that is not advancing you toward the professional life you want should not count as work. It is waste. You have bills, sure, but we often times fool ourselves into justifying behavior  that we really don’t want to be doing. If happiness is the goal, and you’re unhappy in your situation, what’s likely to change first? You or the situation?

We each have 168 hours per week. About 100 are taken for work and sleep. Leaving you about 50 hours to do as you desire.

How can someone manage s million dollar business in their time and others can’t seem to get $500 saved? Wasting time is easy, usually the easy thing to do is the wrong thing to do.

Ideas spread

One reason that ideas spread is that people like telling other people stuff that they might not know. It can be a nice little ego boost. Who doesn’t like feeling smart?

If you have an idea that you want to spread, tell people and keep telling people, if nobody repeats it, well maybe the idea doesn’t fit your audience. If it does spread, it doesn’t mean you’re prolific, it means that you found a suitable audience.

Unfair Judgment

If you unfairly judge people negatively that are poor then you’re a bad person. Here’s the thing, the world has enough unfairly judgmental jerks. I don’t want them near me and will do my best to not be one. I qualified judgmental with the word unfairly because sometimes you are justified to judge, say this person is poor because they did something unethical, well, that’s when judgmental feelings are justified. However, judging someone based on who they are and not what they do or have done  is always a non-starter for me.

Weight Problems

This is for people struggling with their weight or even worse, have given up on it all together. I want you to write three pages.

One page on why you think it’s okay to keep junk food in your life.

One page on why you are okay with leading by poor example.

One page on why you’re okay with cutting your life short and the toll that will take on those that love you.

I don’t know how to go up to a stranger and ask if they need help. But I can broadcast it. Reach out, if not to me to someone that loves you. Get the help you need.

It’s not that I’m down almost 40 pounds since last December, it’s that nobody ever said, “Hey, I love you enough to say your weight and activity levels aren’t healthy. Do something about it.”

More important or at least just as is your activity level. Even if you’re bigger than you want to be, starting exercise, 3-4 hours a week is infinitely better than nothing.
